Wood or Metal: What Type of CNC Should You Use?

    WatsonBy WatsonSeptember 12, 2022No Comments3 Mins Read

Because of available time and lack of qualified personnel, the latest machining techniques have been enhanced and created by automation and technology.

CNC (computer numerical controlled) machining is among the most common forms of the technology-driven machine.

A computer’s automatic control of woodworking and metalworking tools is referred to as CNC. Basically, CNC machines use easel software to automatically work on metal or wood. And now this brings up the question, metal or wood, which kind of CNC is better?

    CNC Routing

CNC routine refers to the process of manufacturing used to guide drill-bit for carving, shaping, and cutting of materials. This technique is very helpful when fabricating inserts for equipment and tools in a proactive case as well as other specialty packaging applications For More Information Please Visit: https://yijinsolution.com/

That is because routing heads may fabricate many cavity depths. Using CNC routing with wood may provide a complex and exceptional finish or part.

Whichever kind of material you choose, CNC routing will still have similar benefits, the major ones being efficiency and automation.

Although CNC routers are often used to cut plastics and wood, you can also use them to cut aluminum. But you will have to use the machine differently as aluminum has the tendency of sticking to cutting tools.

Forms of Wood Used for CNC Woodworking

Mainly, there are three types of wood for CNC woodworking. These include engineered wood, softwood, and hardwood.

    1.      Engineered Wood

Also known as composite wood is a kind of wood particle, fiber, or strand material, which is held together with a binding agent or adhesives.

    2.      Softwood

This is a coniferous tree, at times called a gymnosperm. They are dense compared to hardwood and are thus associated with being simple to machines.

    3.      Hardwood

This is an angiosperm, commonly called a broadleaf tree. Good examples of hardwood include maple, birch, and oak trees.

    CNC Milling Machine

The process of CNC milling begins with a certain part designed on CAD (computer-aided design) software before it is converted into a form your machine will be able to read.

CAM (computer-aided manufacturing) software exports this to CNC machine programs, basically in G-code format. The CNC machine reads coded instructions and later puts them into operation, thus directing all the moves your machine makes.

Well, this milling process duplicates the CAD design in the right material with repeatability, less labor, high-production output, and precision.

Among the key advantages of CNC milling is that it is versatile. CNC mills may cut materials, including alloys, aluminum, iron, and steel, and produce a custom-designed part faster than a traditional machining method. They may as well machine from a horizontal or vertical position and create irregular cavities or surfaces.

These machines are suitable for mold work, where three or two axes of a milling table should be controlled to produce surface contours and cavities. They are also perfect for everything from the most complex stainless steel medical, military, and aerospace parts to core boxes and cast iron foundry patterns.

    Concluding Remarks!

CNC machining has gained popularity in the woodworking and metalworking sector for the past few years. This has attracted hobbyists too. So the kind of CNC machine you need depends on the tasks at hand and the type of material you want to work on.
