    Age Spots: Diagnosis & Treatment

    WatsonBy WatsonNovember 4, 2021No Comments3 Mins Read

Sun spots and age spots are one thing. These are common forms of hyperpigmentation. They appear as small, flat, and darkened patches on the skin that range from light brown to black. These are more common in those over 40, but can also occur earlier.

These are due to an increase in melanin production, which is the natural pigment that gives skin its colour. By protecting your skin from the harmful UV rays, melanin is your skin’s natural sunscreen. This is why you can get tanned in the sun. Excessive sun exposure can increase the production of melanin in the skin. These dark spots, also known as “sun spots”, are often caused by excessive sun exposure. They are most commonly found in areas that are often exposed to the sun, such as the face, neck, and decollete.

    Causes & Symptoms

Exposed to too much sun. While sunlight can be very beneficial, too much exposure can cause sunburn. Keep your hands and face shaded from the sun to protect them. Another reason could be a selenium deficiency. Selenium, an essential trace mineral, plays an important role protecting cells against free radicals. Raw Brazil nuts are an excellent source of selenium.

A deficiency of potassium can also be a reason. You can avoid this by eating potassium-rich foods like avocados, bananas and cantaloupe. Healthy lifestyles will help improve any unwanted condition. To do this, add fresh fruits to your diet and make sure you drink lots of filtered water. Make a conscious effort not to eat processed food, fast food, junk, sweets, sodas, or other sweets.

    Diagnosis

Although age spots are generally harmless, it is important to consult a dermatologist or doctor if you notice any changes in your skin. Age spots that are irregularly shaped, tender, itchy, or growing larger should be examined. Another thing to watch out for is unusual combinations of colors. Age spots are characterized by dryness, roughness, and sometimes even thinning. A biopsy may be performed if your doctor is concerned that the darkened area is not due to age spots. A small amount of skin will be removed to check for abnormalities.

    Treatment of Age Spots

Many people find age spots unattractive and want them to be removed. This is especially true if there is dryness, roughness, or even thinning at the spot. If you don’t want to be bothered by age spots, there are other options. There are many options for getting rid of age spots, including electrosurgery and chemical peels. Or you can choose to go natural and gentler, which is less risky and more expensive, but can still deliver great results. Prescription or over-the-counter bleaching creams can cause skin irritations and toxic toxins. Age spots are not something to be taken as a given.
