Is Leg Pain And Vascular Health Related? – 5 Vascular Causes of Leg Pain

    WatsonBy WatsonJuly 14, 2023Updated:August 2, 2023No Comments4 Mins Read

Your legs endure a lot of beating, as they bear your body’s weight during everyday activities like standing, walking, running, and more. Therefore, it is common to experience leg discomfort, especially after overexertion or overuse. However, if you experience leg pain Memphis, despite not engaging in strenuous activities, there could be an underlying issue.

Leg pain is a common symptom of vascular conditions, which primarily affect the lower extremities. If you experience such pain, it could be due to one of these 5 vascular conditions. Continue reading to learn more.

    1. Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD)

Peripheral artery disease (PAD0 is the blockage or narrowing of your peripheral arteries. Peripheral arteries are the arteries that supply oxygenated blood to your extremities, including your legs and arms. While PAD can affect any peripheral artery, it commonly affects those in your legs.

Leg pain when climbing stairs or walking that disappears when you rest, a symptom known as claudication, is a surefire sign of PAD. If you experience claudication, you should seek immediate medical attention. Having PAD places you at heightened risk of coronary artery disease (CAD) and suffering a stroke or heart attack.

    2. Varicose Veins

Varicose veins develop due to damage to the walls or valves of your veins that affects circulation, allowing blood to flow backward and accumulate. For most people, varicose veins are more of an aesthetic concern than a medical issue. However, these ropey, bumpy blue lines on the legs could be warning signs of more intrinsic vascular issues, particularly if they cause leg discomfort.

Varicose veins do not always cause physical symptoms. However, damaged veins can itch, and your legs might feel achy after long standing hours. Varicose veins could also cause phlebitis, which is vein swelling, and heighten your risk of developing blood clots.

    3. Chronic Venous Insufficiency (CVI)

Varicose veins are a noticeable sign of chronic venous insufficiency. As with spider and varicose veins, chronic venous insufficiency happens due to damage to the walls and valves in your veins, which disrupts blood circulation. However, besides impacting the superficial veins you see, this condition also affects the veins you cannot see.

With chronic venous insufficiency, you might experience skin discoloration and swelling in the ankles. Poor circulation caused by this condition can also raise your risk of suffering non-healing leg ulcers. Tired, achy legs are a prevalent symptom of chronic venous insufficiency.

    4. Deep Vein Thrombosis

Deep vein thrombosis is like CVI in that it develops in the deeper veins of your legs. This condition occurs once a blood clot forms in one or more of these veins. This clot can partially or completely obstruct blood circulation.

If this clot breaks away, it could be life-threatening. All these concerns can cause leg discomfort, throbbing aches, or cramps, along with other symptoms like fatigue and leg heaviness. Often, these symptoms worsen with activity.

    5. Lymphedema

Lymphedema is tissue swelling. This condition stems from the accumulation of fluid typically drained through the body’s lymphatic system. It commonly affects the legs, or arms, but could also happen in the abdomen, genitals, chest wall, and neck.

Any condition that obstructs the drainage of lymph fluid can lead to lymphedema. Common causes include radiation therapy and breast cancer surgery. Serious cases can affect your ability to move the affected limb, and raise your risk of skin infections, among other complications.

There is no reason to suffer from your leg pain or dismiss the discomfort as part of your body’s aging process. In some cases, vascular conditions could be the cause of your pain. Luckily, there are numerous solutions to treat these vascular conditions.

Some treatments entail utilizing techniques to seal off the affected vein so that blood can reroute to neighboring veins. Other treatments entail removing the vein completely. Afterward, your doctor may suggest lifestyle changes and sometimes compression stockings or socks to help preserve vein health and reduce the likelihood of future concerns.
