The onset of Nipah virus infection symptoms begins five to 14 days after exposure. These first symptoms include fever, drowsiness, disorientation, and mental confusion. The disease may also present respiratory complications. Within 24 to 48 hours, coma symptoms will appear. This condition may be caused by encephalitis, an inflammation of the brain. Individuals who have respiratory illnesses or are older than 45 are at increased risk of contracting this disease. During epidemic outbreaks, patients with symptoms should be tested for Nipah virus.
History Nipah virus
During an outbreak, a man with a history of the Nipah virus should undergo a vaccination if he is infected. However, the vaccination for Nipah virus infection is not available yet. It can be transmitted from animal to human by direct contact with the infected animal or by its body fluids. In addition, the man-to-human transmission of Nipah virus is not common.
Infections
Infections caused by Nipah virus can be caused by close contact with an infected person. This infection is spread through the respiratory secretions of infected individuals. Symptoms may include fever, sore throat, and respiratory issues. In rare cases, patients can develop coma and die of the disease. Luckily, there is no vaccine for Nipah. A vaccine can be given to prevent infection.
